A Beginner’s Guide to SSL Security

In 2018, Google made it mandatory for all websites to be transparent of their security level and recommended SSL certification for web browsing. The ‘https’ pretext indicates this to a site URL. The ‘S’ stands for SSL (Security Socket Layer). Without the same, the search rankings of the respective website are impacted. This was a measure taken by Google in 2016 when it ensured that information security of sites and their visitors would be of utmost priority. The certificate transparency helps Google to monitor and audit domain certificates.

What is SSL?

The SSL certification is an indicator that a website is safe to visit using the following messages –

Secure – The site will keep the visitor’s information private

Info – The site is secure but not using a private connection. Any information sent through the site might be visible to some party. While this might allow you to visit the website, it is recommended that you do not save any sensitive information like passwords or credit card details herein.

Not Secure – This site does not meet regulations of certification transparency and should be avoided from browsing.

How does it work?

SSL is a digital certificate, which allows a secure connection between a web server and its respective browser/s. When installed, it activates a padlock-like mechanism on the HTTP protocol. It is a code that allows the site to send information to the server in an encrypted form. Encryption is nothing but a mathematical process which converts data and information into a code. This helps unauthorized access to a site. The key to decoding the encryption on the other end, are built with different bit strength, ranging from 40 bit to 356 bit. The larger the bit count, the number of key combinations are possible. For example, a 128-bit encryption key is a million times stronger and more secure than a 40-bit encryption key.

The information from a secured site is passed through a network of computer servers before it reaches its destination server. Any computer standing between the source computer and the destination server will have access to any information (including passwords, credit card pins, account details, etc.) that is passed on. The SSL certificate encrypts this information and ensures that only the destination server reads its.

SSL certificates can be of various types, depending on the kind of domain that you need to secure. Each type comes with its limits of warranty and encryption options. SSL certificates can be easily installed on any hosting platform, including cloud hosting.
